Mirador de El Paseo de San Pedro
The Paseo de San Pedro is a narrow clifftop promenade that hugs the rocky headland east of Llanes harbour, delivering uninterrupted views of the Cantabrian Sea, the painted cube sculptures on the harbour wall below and, on clear days, the snow-capped Picos de Europa behind the town. It is the single best free viewpoint in Llanes and costs nothing but fifteen minutes of easy walking.
The walk itself
Start at the 14th-century Torre del Puerto beside the harbour and follow the signed path uphill onto the headland. The path is paved and well-maintained, passing through low scrub and wildflowers before opening onto a series of rocky lookout points with iron railings.
The most photographed spot is the point directly above the Cubos de la Memoria — artist Agustín Ibarrola's brightly painted concrete cubes that line the harbour breakwater below. The contrast of vivid geometric colour against dark rock and turquoise water is genuinely striking.
Best times and what else to see
Sunset is the obvious choice: the western sky turns amber behind the town's church tower of Santa María while the sea below glitters. But early morning is even better — the fishing boats are heading out, the light is soft and you will share the path with nobody but dog walkers.
From the highest point of the paseo you can also see the beach of Playa de Toró to the east and, weather permitting, the jagged limestone peaks of the Picos rising 20 km inland — a reminder that Asturias compresses mountains and ocean into an astonishingly small space.
