Mercado Semanal de Llanes
Every Tuesday morning the arcaded streets around the old town of Llanes fill with stalls run by local farmers, cheese-makers and fishers — a living snapshot of Asturian rural life that has barely changed in a century. This is where locals actually shop, not where they perform shopping for tourists.
What to look for
Arrive before 10 am to catch the best selection of Asturian cheeses: crumbly, pungent Gamonéu from the Picos de Europa foothills, creamy Afuega'l Pitu and the blue-veined Cabrales wrapped in leaves. Alongside the cheese stalls, farmers sell hórreo-dried beans, wild mushrooms in season and honey from hives kept in chestnut forests above the coast.
The fish corner is a short walk away at the covered Mercado de Abastos on Calle Manuel Cué, where the morning's catch from Llanes' own fishing fleet — sea bass, spider crab, percebes (barnacles) — arrives still glistening from the harbour.
Making the most of market morning
After filling your bag, duck into one of the sidrerías on Calle Mayor for a late breakfast of a tortilla bocadillo and a small glass of natural cider poured from a height in the traditional Asturian style. The market atmosphere spills right into these bars.
The market wraps up by 2 pm, so combine it with a walk around the medieval old town walls and the harbour — both are within five minutes on foot.
