Les Halles Centrales de Limoges

Locals have been doing their serious food shopping inside this ornate iron-and-glass market hall since 1889, and the ritual hasn't lost any of its theatre. Arrive before 10 am on a Saturday and you'll find the stalls groaning with Limousin beef, walnut oil, cèpe mushrooms and wheels of farmhouse cheese.

What to Buy and Eat

The Limousin breed is one of France's most celebrated beef cattle, and the butchers here know it — whole carcasses hang proudly behind glass while the vendors discuss cuts with the kind of authority that takes decades to earn. Pick up a slice of pâté de pommes de terre, a regional potato pie that tastes far more luxurious than it sounds, from the charcuterie stalls near the central aisle.

In autumn the mushroom sellers dominate an entire corner of the hall, their cèpes and girolles piled into fragrant golden mountains. Even if you have no kitchen to cook in, the spectacle alone is worth the detour.

The Building Itself

The architecture is as much of an attraction as the produce. The hall's cast-iron framework supports a glazed roof that floods the interior with soft morning light, and the decorative ironwork — painted in deep green — has been carefully maintained since the 19th century.

Step outside onto Place de la Motte afterward; the square is ringed with café terraces where you can sit with an espresso and a pastry and watch the city go about its morning.
