Chapelle Saint-Aurélien and the Enamel Workshops of the Cité

While the porcelain museums get all the attention, Limoges's older and arguably more intimate craft — champlevé and cloisonné enamel work — survives in a handful of artisan workshops tucked into the Cité quarter's backstreets. The 17th-century Chapelle Saint-Aurélien, guild chapel of the butchers, anchors a neighbourhood that most visitors walk straight past.

The Chapel and Its Treasures

The Chapelle Saint-Aurélien on Rue Saint-Aurélien is a small, dark, utterly authentic baroque chapel that has belonged to the butchers' guild since 1681. Its interior is crammed with guild banners, votive offerings and a reliquary bust of the city's patron saint in gilded Limoges enamel — the kind of object you'd expect to find behind velvet rope in a national museum, sitting here in an unlocked chapel on a side street.

The chapel is open on weekend afternoons in summer and during the Fête de Saint-Aurélien in October. If you find it locked, ask at the Maison de la Boucherie nearby — they sometimes hold a spare key.

Enamel Workshops Worth Seeking Out

The Atelier Tharaud on Boulevard Louis Blanc and the workshop of independent enameller Anne Delabre near the cathedral both welcome visitors who knock and ask politely. Watching a craftsperson fire a copper plate layered with powdered glass in a kiln and then grind it back to a mirrorlike surface is a process that takes years to master and about ten minutes to become completely obsessed with.

Prices for original enamel pieces start at around €40 for small decorative panels and rise steeply for signed, exhibition-quality work. Either way, a piece of Limoges enamel is a far more distinctive souvenir than a porcelain plate — and far less likely to break in your luggage.
