Vieux-Lille (Old Town)

Vieux-Lille is one of the most architecturally coherent old towns in France, a dense grid of 17th- and 18th-century Flemish baroque townhouses in warm red and ochre brick that feels more like Bruges than Paris. It's compact enough to explore on foot in a morning, yet rich enough to fill an entire weekend.

The Architecture

The showpiece is the Vieille Bourse on Grand'Place — a 1652 arcaded trading exchange whose courtyard hosts a daily second-hand book market and, on summer evenings, tango dancing. The carved stone façade is a riot of cherubs, garlands and Flemish heraldry.

Wander north from Grand'Place up Rue de la Monnaie, the neighbourhood's most photogenic street, where boutiques, concept stores and independent coffee shops occupy ground floors of immaculate baroque buildings. The colours — terracotta, mustard, cream — are extraordinary in afternoon light.

Eating & Drinking in Vieux-Lille

Rue de Gand is the street for a proper Lille dinner: estaminets (traditional Flemish taverns) line both sides, serving carbonnade flamande, welsh rarebit and potjevleesch — the cold terrine of mixed meats in jellied stock that is the city's most polarising delicacy.

For something lighter, duck into Meert on Rue Esquermoise, a patisserie open since 1761 that sells the most famous gaufre (waffle) in Lille — vanilla-cream filled, flat, and inexplicably addictive. Charles de Gaulle reportedly loved them.

Hidden Courtyards

Push open the heavy doors along Rue des Chats Bossus and Rue Basse to find hidden cobbled courtyards — many of the old merchant houses have inner gardens that are completely invisible from the street.

The area around Place aux Oignons, a tiny square tucked behind Rue de la Monnaie, is the quietest and most romantic corner of Vieux-Lille, especially on a weekday morning before the day-trippers arrive.
