Estaminet Chez la Vieille
If you eat only one meal in Lille, eat it at a proper estaminet — and Chez la Vieille on Rue de Gand is the most authentic of the lot. Low beamed ceilings, mismatched antique furniture, hop garlands overhead and a menu that reads like a love letter to northern French-Flemish cooking.
What to Order
Start with a bowl of soupe à la bière, a malty, deeply savoury broth that arrives steaming in an earthenware pot. Follow it with the carbonnade flamande — beef slow-braised in dark Flemish ale with a crust of mustard-spread bread melted on top, served with thick-cut frites.
If you're feeling adventurous, try the potjevleesch: a cold terrine of rabbit, chicken and veal set in a herbed jelly, served with a glass of genièvre (Flemish juniper spirit). It's an acquired taste that locals are fiercely proud of.
The Atmosphere
The room is a genuine time capsule — old beer posters, enamel advertising signs, a grandfather clock that hasn't been accurate since the 1970s, and a noise level that means you'll be shouting across the table by the second course, happily.
Service is brisk and unfussy in the best northern French tradition. Don't expect a sommelier explaining tasting notes — do expect a cold Trois Monts bière de garde arriving exactly when you need it.
Practical Details
Chez la Vieille is on Rue de Gand in Vieux-Lille, a 12-minute walk from Lille-Flandres station. It's popular, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings — book ahead by phone or show up at noon for lunch when tables turn faster.
Budget around €25–35 per person for three courses without wine. The lunch formule (starter + main or main + dessert) is excellent value at around €16.
