Marché de Les Eyzies (Saturday Morning Market)
Every Saturday morning the small square in the heart of Les Eyzies fills with a market that punches well above its size, drawing local producers from across the Vézère valley with seasonal Périgord specialities you'll struggle to find this fresh anywhere else. It's the single best place to stock a picnic basket or take home edible souvenirs.
What to look for
From November through February, a dedicated truffle section operates under the plane trees — vendors sell Tuber melanosporum by the gram and the earthy perfume hits you from 20 metres away. Even a tiny 10-gram truffle shaved over scrambled eggs back at your gîte is a revelation.
Year-round stalls offer walnut oil pressed in the valley, duck rillettes in ceramic pots, aged Cabécou goat cheeses wrapped in chestnut leaves, and seasonal fruits. One reliable cheese vendor, known locally as 'le fromager de Sergeac', brings his own-farm cheeses and will let you taste generously before you buy.
Timing and etiquette
The market runs roughly 8:30 to 13:00; arrive before 10:00 for the best selection and to avoid the tour-group rush. Bring cash — many stalls do not accept cards.
A boulangerie van parks at the north end of the square and sells still-warm walnut bread and flaky croissants; grab one and wander with a coffee from the adjacent Café de la Mairie.
