Grotte de Font-de-Gaume
Font-de-Gaume is one of the last decorated Ice Age caves in the world still open to the general public, and its polychrome bison painted 17,000 years ago stop visitors dead in their tracks. Seeing genuine Magdalenian art in its original limestone chamber is a completely different experience from any replica.
The paintings themselves
The cave's narrow, winding passage opens into chambers where more than 230 figures — bison, mammoths, reindeer, horses and rhinoceroses — were painted using manganese black and iron-oxide red. The famous frieze of five reindeer, one appearing to lick the forehead of another, is rendered with a tenderness that feels startlingly modern.
Many figures exploit the natural bulges of the rock to give the animals a three-dimensional presence. Standing in the low torchlight, it is genuinely difficult to believe these images are 170 centuries old.
Booking and access
Daily visitor numbers are strictly capped at 180 people and tickets regularly sell out weeks in advance in July and August — book online the moment your travel dates are confirmed. The cave is a 1 km walk uphill from the village along the D47 road.
Guided tours last around 45 minutes and are conducted in French, with English translation sheets available. Photography is strictly forbidden inside, so commit the images to memory.
