Vallée de la Beune Canoe Route
The Beune river joins the Vézère just below Les Eyzies, and the stretch of the Vézère between Les Eyzies and Le Bugue offers one of the most scenically rewarding canoe or kayak half-days in the Dordogne — drifting past sheer cream-coloured cliffs, weeping willows and the occasional great white egret with barely a sound beyond the paddle dip.
The Route
The classic half-day paddle runs roughly 14 km from Les Eyzies downstream to Le Bugue, taking two to three hours at a leisurely pace with stops. The current is gentle enough for beginners and children from around age six.
En route you pass beneath the cliffs of the Abri Pataud and can see the overhang of the Abri du Poisson — a rock shelter containing a carved salmon that is one of the oldest sculptures of a fish ever found — from the water, a perspective no land-based visitor gets.
Kingfishers are almost guaranteed on this stretch; grey herons stand sentinel on every gravel bank and in summer swallows skim the surface at eye level from the canoe.
Practicalities
Several canoe-hire outfits operate from Les Eyzies including Canoë Dordogne and Randonnée Dordogne; both offer shuttle return from Le Bugue and supply buoyancy aids and waterproof barrels for cameras and phones. Expect to pay around €15–20 per person for a single kayak.
Go in the morning before the afternoon wind picks up and before motorised pleasure boats appear; the river is at its most glassy and photogenic between 8 and 11 a.m.
Water levels can be low in August — call ahead to confirm the route is fully navigable. May, June and September offer the best balance of water level, weather and crowd density.
