Signal (2,438 m) Panorama
Reached in under 15 minutes from the top of the Télécabine du Signal gondola, the Signal summit delivers what many local guides call the finest unobstructed view of the Mont Blanc massif available without crampons. The full arc from the Aiguilles Rouges to the Dômes de Miage to Mont Blanc itself (4,808 m) unfolds in a single sweeping glance.
What you see from the top
On a clear day the view north reaches across the Aravis range to Lake Geneva; south, the Italian peaks of the Gran Paradiso are visible on the horizon, a reminder that the border is barely 15 km away as the crow flies.
The foreground is just as compelling: the entire Les Contamines valley spreads below like a relief map, with the village, the Bon Nant river corridor and the dark-green reserve all legible at once.
Sunrise visits in July and August are legendary — arrive on the first gondola and you will often have the ridge entirely to yourself as alpenglow turns the Mont Blanc snowfields pink and gold.
Getting there and staying longer
The Télécabine du Signal departs from the mid-station of Les Contamines ski area; in summer the gondola operates from late June to early September, typically 9 am–5 pm (check the OT website for exact dates each year).
From the Signal top station a signed walking loop descends via the Crête des Gittes ridge and returns to the mid-station through alpine pastures — allow 2 hours and wear proper footwear.
The restaurant at the Signal top station serves a short but honest menu of Savoyard staples; the terrace faces due west toward Mont Blanc, making it an absurdly good lunch spot.
