La Guinguette du Louvre-Lens

Tucked into the Louvre-Lens park, this relaxed brasserie-style restaurant serves a short, seasonal menu that leans hard into regional produce — think carbonnade flamande slow-cooked in Pelforth Brune, or a salade de chicorée with lardons and a poached egg that tastes like northern France in a bowl. It is far better than museum catering has any right to be.

What to Order

The carbonnade flamande — beef braised for four hours in dark northern beer with a crust of mustard bread — is the dish to order if it's on the daily menu. It arrives with proper frites cooked in beef dripping, not a freezer bag in sight.

For lighter appetites, the charcuterie planche includes local rillettes, a wedge of Maroilles and sourdough from the boulangerie in Liévin. The house beer list prioritises Brasserie Saint-Germain from nearby Aix-Noulette, which makes some of the most interesting farmhouse ales in the region.

Setting and Practicalities

The terrace overlooks the park's reflecting pool and the low aluminium roof of the Louvre-Lens pavilions — on a blue-sky day it is one of the most photogenic lunch spots in the Nord. Inside, the industrial-chic fit-out references the mining heritage without being heavy-handed about it.

Lunch service runs noon to 14:30 and gets busy on weekends and during major exhibition openings. Book ahead for Saturday lunch; Wednesday is usually walk-in friendly.
