Marché de Lens (Place du Cantin)

Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, Place du Cantin fills with stalls run by the same families who have sold here for generations. This is where locals actually shop, not a prettified tourist market — expect raw honesty, loud banter and exceptional northern produce.

What to Buy

Look for Maroilles cheese from the Avesnois, andouillette de Cambrai, and the region's celebrated chicory in every form — fresh root, roasted coffee substitute and syrup. Vendors from the Flemish border bring jenever-cured herrings and thick-cut speculoos that put supermarket versions to shame.

Seasonal vegetables from local market gardeners are piled high and priced far below supermarket rates. In autumn, endive and pumpkin dominate; in June, strawberries from the Somme valley arrive by the flat.

The Atmosphere

The market spills across the square and into the surrounding streets by 8 a.m., and the best stalls sell out before 11. Grab a coffee and a ficelle picarde — a rolled crêpe filled with ham and béchamel — from one of the snack vans parked on the western edge.

This is a working-class city proud of its identity, and the market reflects that: prices are fair, portions are generous and the vendors will happily explain exactly where their produce comes from.
