Hecho & Ansó Valleys Day Trip
Just 45 minutes northwest of Jaca, the Hecho and Ansó valleys are two of the most scenically dramatic and least-touristed corners of the Spanish Pyrenees. Stone villages, beech forests blazing orange in autumn, and the chance to spot griffon vultures and even brown bears make this one of the great Aragonese day trips.
Valle de Hecho: hiking and village life
The village of Hecho (pop. ~900) is a perfectly preserved medieval settlement of dark stone houses with wooden balconies spilling geraniums. The surrounding valley offers trails ranging from gentle riverside walks along the Río Aragón Subordán to the demanding ascent of Castillo de Acher, a dramatic limestone tower that is one of the iconic climbing destinations in the Spanish Pyrenees.
In the village, stop at the open-air sculpture park — the Simposio de Escultura de Hecho — where abstract stone and bronze works by international artists have been placed among the meadows since 1975, creating a surreal and lovely contrast with the wild landscape.
Valle de Ansó: the most beautiful village in Aragon
Ansó, a few kilometres further north, has repeatedly been voted one of the most beautiful villages in Spain (it holds the 'Pueblo más bonito de España' designation) and a single walk through its narrow cobbled lanes confirms why. The 16th-century church of San Pedro houses a small but excellent ethnographic museum with traditional Ansotano costumes that were worn until the mid-20th century.
The valley's beech forests (hayedos) peak in colour during the last two weeks of October — the drive up the gorge road during this window, with golden canopy closing overhead, is one of the great scenic drives in Aragon. Watch for lammergeier (bearded vultures) riding thermals above the limestone cliffs.
