The Colosseum, Rome
Standing inside the Colosseum as morning light floods through its arched openings is one of the great shivers of world travel. Nearly 2,000 years old and still the largest amphitheatre ever built, it held 50,000 roaring spectators and remains Rome's most electrifying address.
What to See Inside
Book the Arena Floor access to stand where gladiators actually fought — the wooden stage has been partially reconstructed so you can look out across the hypogeum, the labyrinth of tunnels and cages beneath your feet.
The third-tier panoramic level rewards the climb with a sweeping view over the entire oval interior and out toward the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum beyond.
Making the Most of Your Visit
Arrive at opening time (9 am) or in the last 90 minutes before closing to dodge the worst crowds. A combined ticket covers the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill — valid 24 hours across all three sites.
The underground hypogeum tour requires a separate timed booking and sells out weeks ahead in summer; reserve it the moment your travel dates are fixed.
