Porta Palazzo in Turin is the largest open-air market in Europe, sprawling across Piazza della Repubblica every single morning with a sensory overload of colour, dialect and cheap, extraordinary produce. This is where Torinese grandmothers shop, not tourists.
Navigating the Stalls
The market divides into distinct zones: outdoor fruit and vegetable stalls spill across the piazza, while the three covered halls specialise in meat, fish and cheese respectively. The cheese hall alone — with its wheels of aged Castelmagno and tubs of fresh toma — is worth the trip from anywhere in Italy.
On Friday and Saturday a flea-market section called Il Balon fans out into the adjacent streets, selling antique furniture, vintage clothing and enough bric-a-brac to fill a small apartment.
What to Eat and Buy
Grab a warm farinata (chickpea flatbread) from one of the Ligurian vendors near the western entrance, or a paper cone of fried vegetables from the street fryers that set up by 10 am.
Look for Piedmontese specialities you won't easily find elsewhere: bagna cauda paste, gianduja chocolate blocks sold by weight, and white truffle products (especially in autumn). Prices are a fraction of those in tourist-facing delis.
