Monte Jaizkibel Summit Road
The GI-3440 road that winds up Monte Jaizkibel from Irún to Pasaia is one of the most dramatic coastal drives in the entire Basque Country, delivering jaw-dropping views over the Bidasoa estuary, the French Basque coast and the open Atlantic. On a clear day you can see the rooftops of Hondarribia far below and the Pyrenean foothills rolling east into France.
The drive and the mirador
The classic stopping point is the signed mirador near the summit at roughly 543 m, where a stone wall frames an unobstructed panorama stretching from Cabo Higuer lighthouse all the way to the silhouette of La Rhune in France — bring a wide-angle lens or your phone in panorama mode.
Early morning is magical: sea mist often pools in the estuary below while the summit catches the first gold light, and you may have the entire viewpoint to yourself before the weekend hikers arrive.
Combining it with a walk
The GR-121 long-distance trail crosses the summit, and a popular 2-hour loop from the car park near the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe takes in beech forest, coastal heath and a ruined Napoleonic-era fort.
The ermita itself, perched on the western flank, is one of the oldest pilgrimage chapels in Gipuzkoa and worth a quiet five-minute detour — its terrace faces directly out to sea.
