Monte Jaizkibel Summit Road
The winding road to the 543-metre summit of Monte Jaizkibel delivers one of the most jaw-dropping coastal panoramas in the entire Basque Country, taking in the Bidasoa estuary, the French Basque coast, and on clear days the distant silhouette of the Pyrenees. You can drive, cycle or hike up from Hondarribia in under two hours on foot.
The view from the top
From the military-era lookout near the summit, the Bay of Biscay stretches north in an unbroken sweep of deep Atlantic blue, while the terracotta rooftops of Hondarribia cluster below like a model village.
On the clearest winter mornings after a tramontana wind, you can pick out the Cantabrian peaks to the west and the French town of Hendaye directly across the estuary.
Hiking and cycling routes
The GR-121 coastal path traverses the spine of Jaizkibel from Pasaia to Hondarribia, passing ancient hermitages and wind-sculpted heathland; the full traverse takes around five hours one way.
Cyclists tackling the climb from Lezo gain around 500 metres of elevation on smooth tarmac — the same road has featured in the Clásica San Sebastián professional race, so expect company on summer weekends.
Ermita de Guadalupe
Halfway up the mountain sits the 16th-century Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, a pilgrimage chapel with a stone terrace that frames a perfect framed view of the estuary below.
A small bar beside the ermita serves hot cider and tortilla on weekends — a welcome stop before the final push to the summit.
