South Water Caye Marine Reserve Snorkel Trip

A 45-minute boat ride from the Hopkins dock drops you inside the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, part of the Belize Barrier Reef World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse shallow reef systems in the western hemisphere. The visibility on a calm day is frequently 30 metres or more, and the fish life is simply staggering.

What's in the Water

The reserve encompasses patch reefs, seagrass beds and the barrier reef itself; a single morning snorkel can take in spotted eagle rays gliding over sand channels, nurse sharks resting under coral ledges, hawksbill turtles grazing on sponges and dense schools of blue tang and French grunt moving like a single silver-blue organism.

Tobacco Caye — a tiny island inside the reserve accessible on the same trip — sits directly on the barrier reef edge, meaning you can wade from the beach straight onto living coral in chest-deep water. It is one of the most immediately spectacular snorkel entries anywhere in the Caribbean.

Whale sharks pass through the outer reef zone seasonally (March–June is peak), and several Hopkins-based operators run dedicated whale shark trips to Gladden Spit, about 90 minutes south by boat, timed to the full moon.

Booking a Trip from Hopkins

Virtually every guesthouse and hotel in Hopkins can arrange reef trips; well-regarded local operators include Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort's dive shop and independent guides operating from the main Hopkins dock area.

A half-day snorkel trip to Tobacco Caye and surrounding patch reefs typically costs US$45–65 per person including gear, guide and park fees; full-day trips reaching the outer barrier wall cost US$75–100.

Go in the morning — afternoon winds from the east regularly chop up the sea surface and reduce underwater visibility, and the boat ride back is considerably less pleasant.
