Lebeha Drumming Center
At the northern tip of Hopkins' sandy main road, a thatched open-air pavilion pulses with the sound of primero and segunda drums most evenings — this is Lebeha, a community cultural center that has been keeping Garifuna drumming and punta dance alive for decades. It is free to wander in, and the welcome is genuine.
The Music and the People
Lebeha was founded by Jabbar Lambey, a master drummer and one of the most important custodians of Garifuna musical tradition in Belize; on a good evening you may find him or his students in full session, the drumming so physical it reverberates in your chest.
Punta — the fast, hip-driven dance form that evolved from Garifuna ancestral ceremonies — is performed here regularly, and visitors are cheerfully pulled onto the sandy floor to attempt a few steps. No grace required.
The center also runs drumming lessons for visitors, typically one-hour sessions that give you enough technique to understand why this UNESCO-recognised musical tradition is so hypnotically complex.
When to Go and What Else Is Here
Evenings from Thursday through Sunday tend to be most active, especially during the Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations on and around 19 November, when Hopkins becomes the epicentre of the entire country's festivities.
During the day, Lebeha operates a small gift shop selling handmade drums, woven crafts and locally produced hot sauce — all made by community members, all worth buying.
The center is also a good place to ask about arranging home-cooked Garifuna meals, guided cultural walks or boat fishing trips with local fishermen.
