Every Sunday morning, the working-class neighbourhood of Wazemmes erupts into one of northern France's most exhilarating street markets, filling the Place de la Nouvelle Aventure and spilling down surrounding streets. It's where Lille actually shops, eats and argues about cheese.
What to Buy, Eat and Taste
Stalls overflow with Maroilles and Mimolette cheese, andouillette sausages, fresh herring, North African spices and Vietnamese spring rolls — a reflection of Wazemmes's gloriously mixed community that no guidebook cliché can quite capture.
Grab a gaufre de Lille (thick, chewy waffle) from one of the outdoor fryers and eat it standing up while vendors shout prices in a mix of French and Chti dialect. This is breakfast done properly.
Beyond the Food Stalls
The covered hall at the market's centre sells antiques, vinyl records, vintage clothing and bric-a-brac that serious collectors arrive for before 8 a.m. Patience and a good eye reward handsomely.
After shopping, the surrounding streets — particularly Rue Gambetta — fill with people spilling out of brasseries and North African bakeries. Order a pastilla or a mint tea and watch the neighbourhood breathe.
