Cap Blanc-Nez Clifftop
Standing on the chalk headland of Cap Blanc-Nez on the Côte d'Opale, you can see the white cliffs of Dover shimmering across just 34 kilometres of the Channel — on clear days it feels close enough to swim. The wind, the light and the sheer scale of the view are genuinely unforgettable.
The View and the Walk
The GR120 coastal footpath runs along the clifftop and connects Cap Blanc-Nez to Cap Gris-Nez to the south — a 25-kilometre walk that passes through dunes, fishing villages and open sheep pasture with the sea always in sight.
The obelisk at the summit commemorates the Dover Patrol of World War I and gives you a fixed point to aim for as you climb. From here, on a bright morning, container ships queue in the Strait of Dover like slow-moving beads on a string.
Wildlife and Light
The chalk grassland around the cap is a designated nature reserve where orchids bloom in May and peregrine falcons nest in the cliff faces below. Bring binoculars — the bird-watching alone justifies the detour.
Photographers prize the late-afternoon light when the chalk cliffs glow amber and the sea shifts between slate and silver. Sunset here in autumn is among the most dramatic in northern France.
