Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, Cañamero

Eight kilometres from Guadalupe in the sleepy village of Cañamero, this tiny 15th-century hermitage shelters some of the most vivid and least-visited medieval frescoes in all of Extremadura. Almost no tourists find their way here, which makes the experience feel like a private discovery.

The Frescoes Themselves

The interior walls are covered in late Gothic frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, painted in rich ochres, terracottas and deep blues that have survived remarkably intact despite centuries of neglect. The style is naïve and expressive — faces are wide-eyed and gestures dramatic — giving the paintings an emotional directness that more polished Renaissance work often lacks.

The hermitage is small, no bigger than a village chapel, which means you view the frescoes from just a few metres away without any barrier or glass. The intimacy is extraordinary and the silence is total — the only sound is birdsong through the open door.

Getting There and Around Cañamero

Cañamero itself is worth a wander: a compact whitewashed village with a ruined Moorish castle on the hill above it and a handful of bars serving the local Ribera del Guadiana wine. The drive from Guadalupe along the EX-102 takes about 12 minutes and passes through beautiful dehesa landscape of cork oaks and grazing cattle.

The hermitage key is held by the local ayuntamiento (town hall) or a designated keyholder — ask at the village bar nearest the church and someone will invariably know who to call. This is rural Spain at its most authentic and the small effort required to get inside makes the reward feel all the sweeter.
