The Seine Riverbank Path from Vernon to Giverny
The 5-kilometre cycling and walking path that follows the Seine from Vernon station to Giverny is one of the most quietly beautiful short routes in the Île-de-France region — flat, well-surfaced and lined with poplars, willows and wildflower meadows that look almost exactly as they did when Monet painted them in the 1890s.
The Route
The path begins just outside Vernon's medieval centre, crosses the Seine on the old iron bridge beside the ruined Château des Tourelles, then hugs the right bank southward through water meadows to the outskirts of Giverny. The surface is mostly tarmac with a short gravel section through the meadows — manageable on any rental bike.
Along the way you pass the Moulin des Chennevières, a ruined mill on a river island that Monet painted at least a dozen times and that still looks remarkably like his canvases. Pull over on the bridge for the best angle.
Wildlife and Wildflowers
The floodplain meadows between Vernon and Giverny are designated as a sensitive natural zone and are managed with low-intensity farming. In May and June they fill with ox-eye daisies, ragged robin and meadow buttercup — a wildflower display that would have delighted Monet.
Grey herons fish the shallows year-round, kingfishers dart between the willows in summer, and if you cycle quietly at dawn you may spot a rôe deer stepping into the meadow from the woodland edge. The path is also a reliable spot for common blue and brimstone butterflies in warm weather.
Practical Details
Bikes can be rented from Les 2 Roues de Vernon directly outside the train station — expect to pay around €15 for a half-day. Electric bikes are available for those who want a gentler ride. The shop also provides a simple map of the route.
The path is suitable for children on bikes from around age 8 upward. Allow 30–40 minutes cycling at a gentle pace, more if you stop to photograph the mill or watch the herons. The return ride is equally pleasant in the opposite golden light of late afternoon.
