Le Jardin des Plumes Restaurant

Tucked into a half-timbered Norman house on Giverny's main road, Le Jardin des Plumes holds a Michelin star and serves some of the most quietly impressive seasonal cooking in the Seine Valley. Chef David Gallienne's menus read like a love letter to the Norman landscape Monet painted.

The Cooking

Gallienne trained with some of France's most rigorous kitchens and returned to his native Normandy to cook with hyper-local ingredients: Isigny cream, Cotentin lamb, apples from the Auge valley, river fish from the Seine. Dishes are restrained in presentation but technically precise — a roasted pigeon with fermented apple and bitter chicory, or a silky cauliflower velouté with caviar and brown butter.

The tasting menu (around €85–€110 at lunch) changes with the season and occasionally nods to Monet's own documented love of good food — he was famously obsessive about his kitchen garden and his table.

The Setting

The dining room opens onto a walled garden where tables are set in summer under linden trees — one of the loveliest outdoor lunch settings in the region. The interior is calm and unshowy: exposed beams, linen tablecloths, a wine list that leans intelligently into Loire and Burgundy bottles at fair prices.

The hotel attached to the restaurant has nine rooms if you want to make a night of it and catch the gardens at dawn before the day-trippers arrive — genuinely the insider move in Giverny.

Booking and Practicalities

Reservations are essential, particularly on weekends and throughout May and June. Book via the restaurant's website or by phone well in advance — tables fill up alongside the Fondation Monet ticket releases.

A shorter, more affordable lunch formula (around €45) is available on weekdays and offers exceptional value for Michelin-starred cooking. Dress is smart-casual; the atmosphere is relaxed rather than stiff.
