Spianata Castelletto
Ride the Liberty-style lift from Piazza del Portello and emerge onto the Spianata Castelletto terrace for the single most rewarding panorama over Genoa's terracotta rooftops, the Porto Antico cranes, and the silver arc of the Ligurian Sea beyond. Locals come here at dusk with a takeaway Aperol Spritz; tourists rarely find it.
Getting There
The Ascensore Castelletto Levante is a public funicular lift that departs from Piazza del Portello, just a short walk from the Palazzo Ducale. The ride costs the same as a bus ticket (around €1.50 with a city transport card) and takes under two minutes, depositing you at a wide belvedere ringed by a low iron railing.
Alternatively, walk up through the Castelletto neighbourhood — a quieter, more residential quarter of Liberty-era apartment buildings and neighbourhood bars that feels entirely removed from the tourist circuit below.
The View and What Surrounds It
From the terrace you can pick out the striped dome of San Lorenzo, the green copper roof of the Palazzo Ducale, and on clear winter days the snow-capped Ligurian Apennines closing the horizon to the north. The port's colourful container cranes and Renzo Piano's Bigo structure punctuate the waterfront below.
The neighbourhood itself is worth an hour's wander: the Bar Castello on the nearby streets is a no-frills spot beloved by residents for its cheap coffee and tramezzini, and the residential streets have a genuine, unhurried Genoese character that the centro storico can lose on busy summer weekends.
