A City Within a City
The caruggi form the largest medieval centre in Europe, a UNESCO-listed tangle of alleys radiating from the old port. Streets like Via del Campo and Via San Luca have barely changed in 500 years, lined with goldsmiths, herbalists, and tiny shrines to the Madonna.

What to Look For
Duck into the Loggia dei Mercanti on Piazza Banchi, a 16th-century merchants' exchange now used as an exhibition space, and look up at its coffered ceiling. Nearby, the tiny Oratorio di San Filippo Neri hides extraordinary Baroque stucco work behind an unremarkable door.
Street art by local legend Luzzati and others brightens corners that might otherwise feel forgotten. The caruggi reward slow walkers who peer into courtyards and push open half-open doors.
