Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno
Staglieno is not a morbid detour — it is one of the most astonishing open-air sculpture museums in the world, covering 160 hectares of hillside above Genoa with a city of the dead that rivals any European art gallery. Oscar Wilde called it sublime; Evelyn Waugh was fascinated; and the life-size marble angels and weeping women carved by 19th-century Genoese sculptors are genuinely breathtaking.
The Art and Architecture
Opened in 1851, Staglieno was designed by Carlo Barabino and expanded across a valley with neoclassical colonnades, a replica Pantheon, and thousands of privately commissioned tombs. The sculpture quality is extraordinary — the most famous piece is Il Angelo (The Angel) by Onorato Toso, a seated marble angel so lifelike that photographs of it circulated in the 19th century as 'real angel' hoaxes.
The tombs of Genoese merchant families are architectural set-pieces in themselves: Egyptian revival obelisks, art nouveau bronze doors, and entire miniature chapels carved from Carrara marble. The effect walking through the colonnades on a misty morning is genuinely cinematic.
Practical Tips for a Visit
Allow at least two hours — the cemetery is vast and the hillside terrain means comfortable shoes are essential. A free printed map is available at the entrance gate, and the main Pantheon area is signposted, but the most rewarding discoveries come from wandering off the main paths into the older sections on the slopes.
The grave of Constance Lloyd, wife of Oscar Wilde, is here and has become a quiet pilgrimage site. Giuseppe Mazzini, the Italian unification hero, is also buried at Staglieno, in a simple tomb that contrasts sharply with the operatic grandeur surrounding it.
