Gallipoli Old Town (Città Vecchia)
Gallipoli's historic centre sits on a limestone island tethered to the modern town by a single 16th-century bridge, and the moment you cross it you feel centuries compress. Whitewashed alleys, salt-bleached churches and fishermen mending nets on sun-warmed steps make this one of the most photogenic old towns in southern Italy.
Walking the Island
Start at the Angevin Castle that guards the bridge — its cylindrical towers reflect in the harbour water at golden hour with almost theatrical drama. From there, follow Via Antonietta De Pace through the tightest lanes, where bougainvillea spills over ochre walls and cats sleep on doorsteps worn smooth by centuries of sandals. The route eventually opens onto the seafront Riviera Armando Diaz, where you can watch local fishermen unload the morning catch directly onto the quay.
The Cathedral of Sant'Agata, rebuilt in flamboyant Baroque style in the 17th century, anchors the island's heart. Step inside to see paintings attributed to the school of Giovanni Andrea Coppola — the gilded altars and trompe-l'œil ceiling are completely out of proportion to the town's modest size, which makes them all the more astonishing.
Best Times to Visit
Early morning — before 9 a.m. — belongs to locals: old men drinking espresso at Bar Duomo, women hanging laundry between windows three storeys up. The lanes are cool, the light is golden and the selfie crowds have not yet arrived. Return again at dusk when the limestone glows amber and the aperitivo bars along the waterfront fill with the smell of Aperol and fried mussels.
July and August bring a festive buzz but genuine overcrowding; May, June and September offer warm swimming weather with a fraction of the crowds. The Feast of Sant'Agata (first Sunday of February) sees candlelit processions wind through every alley — a moving, deeply local spectacle rarely witnessed by tourists.
