Baia Verde & Lido San Giovanni
Stretching south of the city centre, the Riviera di Ponente is Gallipoli's sun-drenched answer to the Côte d'Azur — a string of fine white-sand beaches lapped by water so transparent it shifts from mint green to deep cobalt within a few strokes of the shore. Baia Verde is the most celebrated stretch, but neighbouring Lido San Giovanni offers the same quality with a slightly more local crowd.
The Water Really Is That Colour
The Ionian Sea along this coast sits over pale limestone and fine quartz sand, which gives it that almost Caribbean translucency that fills every Instagram grid in July and August. Baia Verde's lidos — Lido Baia Verde, Lido Azzurro — rent sunbeds, pedalos and snorkelling gear, making it easy to spend a full day without planning anything at all.
Water temperature peaks at around 27–28 °C in August, and the sea stays swimmable well into October when the beaches are blissfully uncrowded. Jellyfish (meduse) can appear in August; ask the lido staff before diving in.
Beyond the Sunbed
The rocky outcrops between the sandy stretches are brilliant for snorkelling — you'll find octopus, sea urchins and shoals of bream in just two or three metres of water. Bring water shoes because the limestone entry points are sharp.
In the evenings, the promenade behind Baia Verde fills with families on the passeggiata, gelato in hand, and the beach bars switch from aperitivo mode to open-air disco — a very Salentine rhythm that keeps going until 2 am in peak season.
