Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani – Monte Tuscolo Trail
A 45-minute hike through oak and chestnut forest above Frascati leads to the grassy summit of Monte Tuscolo (670 m) and the ghostly ruins of ancient Tusculum — a place so quiet and so dramatic that it is hard to believe Rome is visible just 25 kilometres away. This is the Castelli Romani at their most elemental.
The Hike
The most popular trailhead starts at the Camaldoli di Tuscolo monastery on Via Tuscolana, roughly 4 km above Frascati town centre (reachable by taxi or a steep road-bike ride). The marked trail CAI 613 climbs steadily through the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani, a protected volcanic landscape of lava-stone outcrops, wild cyclamen and tall turkey oaks.
After about 2.5 km the forest opens onto the ruins of the Roman theatre of Tusculum — a remarkably intact cavea carved into the hillside that once seated 3,000 spectators. Sit in the stone tiers and look south across the Alban Hills; the silence is almost theatrical in itself.
Summit & Return
The final push to the summit cross takes another 20 minutes and rewards with a 360-degree panorama: Rome and its suburbs to the west, the Alban Lake caldera to the south, and on exceptional days the Apennine snowfields to the east. The volcanic crater topography is unmistakable from up here.
Return via the same path or loop down through the medieval ruins of Tusculum town to the hamlet of Grottaferrata, where the 11th-century Basilian abbey (Abbazia di Grottaferrata) makes an excellent final stop before catching a bus back to Frascati.
