Belvedere di Frascati
Standing on the stone balustrade of Frascati's main belvedere, the entire Roman Campagna unrolls before you like a relief map — the dome of St Peter's floats on the horizon twenty kilometres away. At dusk the sky turns amber behind the city and locals gather here as naturally as they do in any piazza.
The View Itself
The terrace sits at roughly 320 metres above sea level and on clear winter mornings, after rain has scrubbed the air clean, you can pick out the Alban Hills curving south and the glint of the Tyrrhenian Sea beyond the Castelli Romani plateau.
Photographers love the golden hour when the warm light rakes across the umbrella pines lining Viale Vittorio Veneto below and the terracotta rooftops of the old town glow like embers.
Getting the Most from Your Visit
The belvedere is a two-minute walk from Piazza Marconi, Frascati's central square, making it easy to combine with an aperitivo at one of the bars facing the piazza.
Come on a weekday morning to have the railings to yourself; on Sunday afternoons half of Rome's suburbia arrives for the passeggiata and the atmosphere is festive but crowded.
