Ses Illetes Beach
Consistently ranked among Europe's finest beaches, Ses Illetes is a narrow spit of blinding white sand lapped by water so turquoise it looks digitally enhanced. Walking its length at golden hour, with the salt flats of Estany Pudent shimmering behind you, is one of the Balearics' defining experiences.
The Beach Itself
Ses Illetes stretches northward from La Savina along a slim peninsula, with shallow, glassy water on both sides — you can wade in from either flank depending on the wind. The sand is fine and pale, almost powdery underfoot, and the sea floor stays sandy and gentle for a long way out, making it ideal for families and swimmers alike.
At the very tip of the peninsula the beach merges into Punta Prima, a wilder, rockier continuation where nudism is common and the crowds thin dramatically. Bring snorkel gear — the posidonia seagrass meadows just offshore are UNESCO-protected and teeming with sea life.
Getting There & Staying Sane
Formentera bans private cars from the Ses Illetes road in summer, so rent a bicycle in La Savina (five minutes from the ferry port) and pedal the flat track north — it takes about fifteen minutes and the ride itself is gorgeous. Alternatively, a water taxi runs directly from La Savina harbour.
Arrive before 10 a.m. to claim a spot and beat the day-trippers who flood in from Ibiza on morning ferries. A handful of chiringuito beach bars serve cold drinks and fresh grilled fish; El Molí de Sal is the most reliable for a long, lazy lunch with your feet in the sand.
