Far de la Mola Lighthouse

Perched on the dramatic eastern cliffs of the La Mola plateau, the Far de la Mola lighthouse has guided ships since 1861 and rewards visitors with a sheer 100-metre drop to the Mediterranean below. Jules Verne reportedly visited and was inspired to write part of 'Hector Servadac' here — a small monument marks the spot.

The view and the walk

The lighthouse sits at the far eastern end of Formentera's highest point, and on a clear day you can see the Ibiza coastline, the Pitiüses archipelago and, in exceptional conditions, the faint outline of the Valencian coast on the Spanish mainland. Sunset here turns the limestone cliffs a deep amber while the beam begins its nightly rotation.

A signed walking trail, the Camí de Sa Pujada, climbs from the village of El Pilar de la Mola through pine and juniper scrub to reach the plateau. The full loop from El Pilar takes about 90 minutes and passes several miradors overlooking the southern coast.

El Pilar de la Mola Sunday market

The village of El Pilar de la Mola, just 2 km from the lighthouse, hosts a beloved artisan market every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon from April to October. Local jewellers, ceramic artists and leather workers set up stalls along the main street, and the quality is noticeably higher than typical tourist markets.

Combine the lighthouse visit with the market and dinner at one of El Pilar's small restaurants — Can Dani is a local favourite for grilled lamb and local wine — before the drive back down the winding road as the stars emerge over the plateau.
