Tour Rivalland (Église Notre-Dame Belfry)
Climb the belfry tower of the Église Notre-Dame and the whole of Fontenay-le-Comte unfolds beneath you — a mosaic of slate rooftops, the silver thread of the Vendée river, and the bocage stretching to the horizon. It is the single best elevated viewpoint in the town and it costs almost nothing.
The climb and the reward
The ascent involves a tight spiral staircase of around 80 steps, emerging onto a narrow stone gallery that wraps around the base of the spire. On a clear day you can pick out the towers of Château de Terre-Neuve to the south and the flat glint of the Marais Poitevin wetlands to the west.
The church itself, begun in the 15th century, is a fine example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture and worth a slow look before or after the climb. The nave's soaring vaulted ceiling and the quality of the stained glass are genuinely impressive for a town of this size.
Golden hour photography
Late afternoon light turns the tuffeau stone of the old town a deep amber, and the shadows cast by the medieval street grid become dramatic from above. Photographers should aim to be at the top about an hour before sunset.
The view north takes in the Renaissance quarter around Rue du Pont-aux-Chèvres, where 16th-century merchants' houses cluster along the riverbank — a reminder that Fontenay was once the cultural capital of Poitou, rivalling even Poitiers.
