Pont-Vieux & Quais de la Vendée

The old stone bridge spanning the Vendée river at the foot of the historic town offers one of the most quietly spectacular viewpoints in the whole département — a mirror of medieval spires, tuffeau walls and weeping willows trembling in the current. Come at golden hour and you will understand why Rabelais called Fontenay the 'fontaine de toute science'.

The Classic Panorama

Standing on the Pont-Vieux at dusk, the silhouette of the Église Notre-Dame rises to your left while the pale stone quayside houses glow amber in the fading light — it is one of those rare French town scenes that feels entirely unposed.

The river here is calm and wide enough to produce near-perfect reflections on still evenings, making it a favourite spot for local photographers and painters.

Walking the Quays

A gentle 20-minute riverside walk along the Quai Poey d'Avant takes you past restored mill buildings and small weirs where herons stand motionless in the shallows.

The path connects to the wider Vendée greenway cycling network, so you can extend the stroll into a longer ride through the bocage if you have a bike.
