Restaurant Les Dauphins
Tucked into the old town a short walk from the church, Les Dauphins has been feeding Fontenay locals for years with honest, seasonal Vendée cooking — think mogettes au jambon, river fish from the Vendée, and tarte aux noix that tastes exactly as a grandmother's should. The fixed-price lunch menu is one of the best-value meals in the département.
What to order
The mogettes — slow-cooked white haricot beans served with a generous slice of local ham — are the regional dish you must try at least once, and Les Dauphins does them properly, with beans that are creamy rather than chalky and a ham that has actual flavour. Follow with a fillet of sandre (pike-perch) from the Marais Poitevin, pan-fried simply with butter and herbs.
The cheese course is non-negotiable: a selection of local chèvres arrives with walnut bread baked in-house, and the tarte aux noix that closes the meal is dense, not-too-sweet and deeply satisfying with a glass of Fiefs Vendéens white wine.
The room and the atmosphere
The dining room is unpretentious — tiled floors, checked tablecloths, a blackboard menu — but the cooking is careful and the service warm in the way that only neighbourhood restaurants manage. Lunch fills up fast with local workers and retirees, which is always a reliable sign of quality.
Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings when the kitchen stretches to more elaborate dishes and the wine list gets a proper workout. The terrace opens in summer and looks out onto a quiet back street of old stone houses.
