Piazzale Michelangelo
Perched on a hill south of the Arno, Piazzale Michelangelo delivers the panorama that appears on every Florentine postcard — terracotta domes, the needle of the Badia tower, and the full sweep of the city blushing at sunset. It is touristy, yes, but for very good reason.
Timing the perfect view
Sunset is the undisputed peak moment: the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore turns amber-gold and the Arno mirrors the sky. Arrive 30–40 minutes early to claim a spot along the stone balustrade.
Dawn is the secret weapon — almost no crowds, cool air, and a soft pink light that makes the city look freshly painted. The No. 12 or 13 bus from the city centre runs early enough to make it worthwhile.
What's around the square
The bronze copy of Michelangelo's David at the centre of the piazza is a useful orientation point and a fun photo stop in its own right.
From Piazzale Michelangelo it's a short uphill walk to the Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte — one of Florence's oldest and most beautiful churches, with a geometric marble façade and Gregorian chanting by monks at 5:30 pm daily.
The kiosk bars around the square sell decent Aperol Spritz and local craft beer; not fine dining, but perfectly calibrated for a sunset drink with that view.
