Chianti Classico Wine Road (Via Chiantigiana)
Drive the SS222 south from Florence toward Siena and within 20 minutes the city dissolves into a landscape of cypress alleys, terracotta farmhouses, and vine-striped hillsides that look exactly like a Renaissance painting background — because they are. This is the Chianti Classico heartland, and it rewards an entire day of slow exploration.
Key stops along the route
Greve in Chianti, 27 km south of Florence, is the informal capital of the region: a triangular medieval piazza ringed with arcaded wine shops, a weekly Saturday market, and the Enoteca Falorni — one of Italy's finest wine shops with over 1,000 labels and a self-serve tasting machine that accepts prepaid cards.
Panzano in Chianti is a tiny hill village famous for two things: the view from its castle walls across the Conca d'Oro valley, and Dario Cecchini — a butcher of near-legendary status whose shop on Via XX Luglio is a pilgrimage site for meat lovers. His free beef tartare samples are not a marketing gimmick; they are genuinely extraordinary.
Castello di Brolio, the ancestral home of the Ricasoli family (who effectively invented modern Chianti Classico in the 19th century), offers cellar tours and tastings by appointment. The castle gardens and views over the Arbia valley are open to walk-in visitors.
How to explore it properly
Rent a car in Florence — the SS222 is not served by useful public transport. A full loop Florence–Greve–Panzano–Radda–Gaiole–Castello di Brolio and back takes a comfortable day with stops.
Most estates (called 'fattorie' or 'cantine') welcome visitors for tastings, but booking ahead is increasingly expected at the better-known ones. Aim for 2–3 estate visits maximum in a day to keep the experience pleasurable rather than rushed.
