Mercato Settimanale di Este
Every Friday morning the Piazza Maggiore and surrounding streets fill with stalls selling everything from Euganean Hills honey and local cheeses to work boots and linen tablecloths. This is Este as the Estensi have always known it — loud, colourful, and entirely untouched by tourist curation.
What to Buy
Head straight for the food stalls clustered near the Duomo end of the square. Look for vendors selling Monte Veronese cheese, jars of Colli Euganei fig jam, and fresh pasta from Paduan producers. Prices are noticeably lower than in Venice or Padua's Piazza delle Erbe market.
The non-food section stretches along Via Principe Amedeo and is a brilliant place to find sturdy Italian workwear, ceramics from local workshops, and inexpensive linen — the kind of practical shopping that reminds you this is a real working town.
Eating Around the Market
By 10 am the bars around Piazza Maggiore are buzzing with locals taking a mid-morning ombra (small glass of wine) or a spritz with a tramezzino. Pull up a chair at Bar Centrale or one of the unnamed counters along the arcade and order whatever is on the counter — you will not be disappointed.
The market winds down by 1 pm, so arrive before 9 am for the best produce selection and the most atmospheric light for photos.
