Sentiero dei Limoni (Erchie–Maiori Section)
Long before the SS163 was blasted into the cliff face, mule tracks threaded the terraced hillsides between Amalfi Coast villages, and the stretch of the Sentiero dei Limoni connecting Erchie to Maiori remains one of the least-walked — and most rewarding — segments of this historic network. Canopied by pergola lemon groves and scented with citrus blossom in spring, it feels like a secret the locals
The Route
The path begins at the upper edge of Erchie village, climbing through terraced gardens of sfusato amalfitano lemon trees whose fruit hangs at eye level, enormous and waxy-yellow, from April onwards.
The trail takes approximately 1.5–2 hours one way to Maiori, with moderate elevation gain; the return can be made by SITA Sud bus along the coast road, making it a practical loop.
What Makes It Special
Unlike the more famous Sentiero degli Dei further west, this path sees a fraction of the foot traffic, meaning you will often have the terraces entirely to yourself — just the buzz of bees, the scent of lemons and the sea glinting far below.
En route you pass old stone limonaia shelters where farmers once stored tools and rested during the harvest; some are still in use and their owners occasionally offer a bag of lemons or a glass of water to passing walkers.
Practical Notes
The path is not always clearly signed — download the track on Wikiloc or AllTrails before setting out, and wear trail shoes rather than sandals as some sections are uneven cobblestone.
Spring (April–May) is the finest season: lemon blossom fills the air with fragrance, temperatures are mild and the hillsides are intensely green after winter rains.
