Belvedere di Capo d'Orso
The headland of Capo d'Orso, rising just north of Erchie, offers one of the most dramatic unobstructed panoramas on the entire Amalfi Coast — a sweeping arc of coastline from Maiori to Cetara with the Tyrrhenian Sea glittering hundreds of metres below. Serious photographers and casual walkers alike make the short detour for a view that earns every step.
The Viewpoint & the Walk
A signed footpath leaves the SS163 near the Capo d'Orso bend and climbs through Mediterranean scrub — rosemary, rock rose and wild fennel — to an open limestone terrace where the full coastal panorama reveals itself.
The walk takes roughly 20–30 minutes from the road and requires sturdy footwear; the path is rocky but well-trodden and suitable for most fitness levels.
What You'll See
On a clear day the islands of Capri and Ischia are visible to the northwest, while the terracotta rooftops of Maiori spill down to the beach directly below and the whitewashed cube houses of Cetara punctuate the cliffs to the east.
At sunset the light catches the cliffs at a low angle, turning the limestone amber and rose — this is the moment every travel photographer is chasing.
Geology & Nature
Capo d'Orso is composed of Mesozoic dolomitic limestone, and the eroded rock formations along the path have a sculptural, almost lunar quality that contrasts beautifully with the blue sea below.
Peregrine falcons nest in the cliff faces here; scan the thermals above the headland in the morning for a chance sighting.
