Erchie Village Upper Quarter

While day-trippers head straight for the beach staircase, the tight web of vaulted lanes and sun-bleached piazzette that make up Erchie's upper village sees almost no outside visitors — which is precisely what makes a slow wander through it so quietly thrilling. Geraniums spill from window ledges, cats sleep on warm stone steps and elderly residents sit outside doorways as they have for generation

Architecture & Atmosphere

Erchie is a borgata — a hamlet — rather than a full town, and its scale is intimate: the entire upper quarter can be walked end to end in under ten minutes, yet every corner yields a photogenic detail, from a rusted iron balcony to a Madonna shrine tucked into a niche.

The buildings are typical Amalfi Coast vernacular: thick whitewashed walls, barrel-vaulted ground floors that once stored fishing equipment and boats, and external staircases climbing to upper living quarters.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

The village church, a modest but beautifully proportioned baroque structure, anchors the small piazza at the heart of the upper quarter; its interior holds a 17th-century painted wooden ceiling worth a few minutes of quiet attention.

Mass is still celebrated here on Sunday mornings and on the Feast of the Assumption (15 August), when the entire village gathers and the piazza fills with the smell of incense and fresh sfogliatelle from a neighbouring kitchen.

Local Life

A single small alimentari sells local produce — anchovies in salt, dried figs, colatura di alici (the intensely savoury anchovy sauce Cetara is famous for, available throughout this stretch of coast) — and the owner is an excellent source of local knowledge.

Evenings in the piazza, when the heat softens and neighbours pull chairs outside, offer a glimpse of southern Italian village life that is increasingly rare on this heavily touristed coastline.
