Avenue de Champagne
A single tree-lined boulevard in Épernay holds more Champagne than anywhere else on earth — beneath the pavement lie over 100 km of chalk cellars belonging to Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, Pol Roger and their legendary neighbours. Walking it feels like strolling through a living almanac of bubbles.
The Boulevard of Big Names
Stretching barely 1.5 km from the town centre toward the Marne valley, Avenue de Champagne is flanked by grand 19th-century mansions and wrought-iron gates that belong to the world's most famous Champagne houses. Moët & Chandon's headquarters at No. 20 is the undisputed anchor — its cellars alone store around 28 million bottles at any one time.
Perrier-Jouët's art-nouveau Villa Demoiselle at No. 26 is a hidden architectural gem hiding in plain sight, while De Castellane's tower at the far end offers the only rooftop view over the whole street. Even if you never pop a cork, the sheer concentration of history packed into one road is staggering.
Cellar Tours Worth Booking
Moët & Chandon runs the most polished cellar tour on the avenue, descending 30 metres into chalk galleries carved by Benedictine monks — book online at least a week ahead in summer as slots sell out fast. The guided visit ends with a tasting flight and is priced from around €30 per person.
Mercier, a short drive away on the same road, is the most theatrical option: a laser-guided barrel train carries you through 18 km of illuminated tunnels past giant oak tuns. Smaller house De Venoge offers a more intimate tasting experience if you prefer fewer crowds and a longer conversation with the cellar master.
