Mercado Medieval de El Burgo de Osma
Every August the town transforms its cathedral square and surrounding streets into a full-blown medieval market that draws artisans, falconers, blacksmiths and food vendors from across Castile. It is loud, smoky, colourful and completely committed to its historical premise.
What to Expect
Stalls sell hand-forged ironwork, hand-stitched leather goods, ceramic pottery in the earthy Castilian tradition and herb bundles tied with rough twine. The smell of roasting lamb on open spits drifts through the entire old quarter from mid-morning onwards, making resistance to an early lunch essentially impossible.
Street performers in period costume — jugglers, troubadours, a surprisingly convincing town crier — circulate through the crowds. The event typically runs across a long weekend, with the Saturday evening torchlit procession through the cathedral close being the undisputed highlight.
Food and Drink at the Market
Look for the stalls serving migas castellanas — fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and peppers — served in terracotta bowls. This is one of those dishes that sounds humble and tastes extraordinary, especially paired with a clay cup of young Ribera del Duero red poured straight from a barrel.
Local cheese producers from the surrounding Soria province set up tasting tables, and the aged sheep's milk cheeses from nearby villages are worth buying in quantity to take home. Bring a cool bag.
