Río Ego Riverside Walk
The Ego river carved the narrow gorge that Eibar grew up inside, and the riverside path that threads through the city and out into the valley beyond is the best way to understand the town's geography — and to escape it entirely within fifteen minutes of walking.
Through the City and Out
The paved riverside promenade begins near the train station and passes under old factory bridges, beside restored mill buildings and through small neighbourhood squares where pensioners play mus at outdoor tables. The contrast between the tight urban fabric above and the green, rushing water below is quintessentially Basque.
After roughly 2 kilometres the path leaves the urban area and enters a wooded corridor of alder, willow and hazel that follows the river toward Malzaga. Here the water is clean enough to spot brown trout holding in the current, and kingfishers flash electric blue between the bankside roots.
Connecting the Valley Towns
The Ego valley trail eventually links Eibar with Elgoibar and the Deba river, making it possible to walk or cycle between several Basque market towns on a single day. The stretch between Eibar and Malzaga (about 5 km) is flat, paved and suitable for all fitness levels, including pushchairs.
Spring is the prime season: the riverbanks are loud with birdsong, wild garlic carpets the forest floor and the hills above are still vivid green before the summer heat bleaches them. Autumn runs a close second, when the mixed woodland turns every shade of amber above the grey industrial rooflines.
