Ermita de San Miguel de Arretxinaga
A 25-minute drive from Eibar in the nearby town of Markina-Xemein, this extraordinary hermitage is built around three enormous prehistoric dolmenic boulders that lean against each other inside the circular chapel — one of the most surreal sacred spaces in the entire Basque Country.
A Chapel Inside a Megalith
The circular 18th-century chapel was constructed specifically to enclose the three massive sandstone boulders, which local tradition holds were thrown by the archangel Michael himself. Stepping inside feels like entering a cave: the boulders dwarf the altar, and candle smoke has blackened the stone over centuries of devotion.
Basque mythology layers over Christian iconography here in a way that feels entirely natural — the site was sacred long before the chapel was built, and the boulders still attract offerings of flowers, coins and small notes tucked into the crevices. It is a deeply atmospheric place at any hour, but especially at dusk.
Markina-Xemein and the Pelota Court
The hermitage sits just outside Markina-Xemein, a small town famous throughout the Basque Country as the birthplace of more professional pelota players than anywhere else on earth. The town's fronton (pelota court) is a working, lived-in space where you can watch informal games on weekend afternoons for free.
Together, the hermitage and the fronton make Markina-Xemein a half-day excursion from Eibar that feels entirely off the tourist trail. The drive itself — winding through oak-forested hills past caseríos (Basque farmhouses) with their wide eaves and ochre render — is reward enough.
