Eguisheim Grands Crus Vineyard Trail
Stepping out of Eguisheim's southern gate puts you immediately among two of Alsace's most celebrated grands crus vineyards — Eichberg and Hatschbourg — where Gewurztraminer and Riesling vines climb loess and limestone slopes with the Vosges as a backdrop. This is one of the most scenic and accessible vineyard walks in France.
The Route
A signed sentier viticole (vineyard trail) departs from the car park on the southern edge of the village and loops through the Eichberg and Hatschbourg grand cru parcels in a 6 km circuit that gains about 120 metres of elevation — enough to earn the views without requiring hiking boots.
Numbered marker posts along the trail correspond to a free multilingual leaflet (available at the tourist office) explaining soil types, grape varieties and the influence of the Vosges rain shadow that makes this corner of Alsace one of the driest in France. The information is genuinely interesting rather than boilerplate.
In late September and early October, vendange (harvest) teams work the rows and the air smells of crushed Gewurztraminer — a heady, rose-and-lychee perfume that is one of the most distinctive sensory experiences in Alsatian wine country.
Caves and Tastings Along the Way
Several domaines with tasting rooms face directly onto the trail or sit within a 5-minute detour. Domaine Paul Ginglinger, a biodynamic producer on Rue du Bouxhof, offers walk-in tastings most weekday mornings; their Eichberg Gewurztraminer is a benchmark example of the grand cru.
The Cave Vinicole d'Eguisheim (Wolfberger), one of Alsace's largest cooperatives, sits just outside the village on the Route de Colmar and offers free self-guided cellar tours with paid tastings — a useful introduction to the full range of Alsatian varietals if you are new to the region's wines.
