Eguisheim Christmas Market (Marché de Noël)
Eguisheim hosts one of the most intimate and genuinely atmospheric Christmas markets in Alsace, a region already famous for them. Unlike the vast commercial fairs in Strasbourg or Colmar, this one fits snugly inside the medieval ring, so the mulled wine steam mingles with the scent of pine garlands strung between half-timbered gables.
What to Expect Inside the Ring
Around 40 wooden chalets occupy Place du Château Saint-Léon and the first ring road from late November through late December. Stall-holders sell Alsatian bredele biscuits, hand-blown glass ornaments, locally thrown pottery and beeswax candles — a noticeably higher craft quotient than the souvenir-heavy markets in larger towns.
Look for the chalet selling vin chaud made with Eguisheim's own Gewurztraminer rather than generic table wine; the difference in flavour is immediately obvious. Flammekueche (tarte flambée) is cooked in a wood-fired oven on-site and handed over on a wooden board, the perfect street food for cold fingers.
Timing and Crowd Strategy
The market officially opens on the last weekend of November and runs through 27 December most years, closing on Christmas Day itself. Weekday afternoons between 2 and 5 pm are the quietest windows; Saturday evenings are magical but genuinely packed.
A free shuttle bus typically runs from Colmar's central car parks on weekends during the market period — check the Colmar Tourisme website each year for the current timetable, as routes are updated annually.
