Iglesia de Santa Ana de Durango
Rising above Durango's medieval core, the 15th-century Church of Santa Ana is one of the finest Gothic structures in the Basque Country, its honey-stone tower visible from every corner of the old town. Step inside to find soaring ribbed vaults, ornate altarpieces and centuries of quiet devotion.
A Medieval Masterpiece
The church was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and blends late Gothic architecture with Renaissance detailing on its carved doorways. The main portal facing the Plaza de Santa Ana rewards a close look — every column capital tells a different biblical story.
Inside, the single nave stretches impressively long, lit by stained glass that casts amber and cobalt light across the stone floor in the morning hours. The gilded baroque altarpiece at the high altar was added in the 17th century and dominates the interior with theatrical flair.
The Square Around It
Plaza de Santa Ana, the flagstone square in front of the church, is the social heart of Durango. Locals gather here after Sunday mass, and the surrounding arcaded buildings house pintxos bars that spill tables onto the square on warm evenings.
The square also hosts seasonal festivals, including the Durangoko Azoka book and record fair in December, so timing your visit right can layer a cultural event on top of the architecture.
