Durangoko Azoka
Every December, Durango transforms into the cultural capital of the Basque-speaking world when Durangoko Azoka — the largest Basque-language book and music fair on the planet — takes over the town. Publishers, musicians, filmmakers and readers converge for five days of signing sessions, concerts and spirited debate.
What Happens at the Fair
More than 200 publishers and record labels fill the Landako exhibition pavilion and overflow into the town centre, displaying books, vinyl, films and crafts entirely in Euskara, the Basque language. It is simultaneously a trade fair and a popular festival, drawing over 100,000 visitors in a single week.
Author signing queues snake around the pavilion, live txalaparta percussion performances erupt spontaneously in the streets, and every pintxos bar runs a special menu. Even if you don't speak Basque, the atmosphere is electric and the illustrated children's books make beautiful, unusual souvenirs.
Planning Your Visit
The fair runs for five days in early December, typically the first full week of the month. The main venue is Landako Gunea on Landako Etorbidea, a short walk from the train station. Entrance to the fair floor is free.
Accommodation books out months in advance, so plan early or consider staying in nearby Bilbao (30 min by train) and commuting in. Evenings are lively in the old town bars long after the pavilion closes.
